Airspace

GPS
Global Positioning System technology that provides precise location data to drones. GPS enables autonomous flight, return-to-home functions, and accurate positioning. GPS signals can be blocked by dense structures or heavy cloud cover.
Hover
The ability of a drone to maintain a stable, stationary position in the air. Hovering requires constant adjustment of rotor speed and angle. Wind conditions and battery power affect hovering stability and duration.
Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU)
A sensor system that detects acceleration, rotation, and orientation. The IMU helps the drone maintain stability and level flight. Multiple IMUs provide redundancy for safer, more reliable flight.
Jitter
Unwanted vibration or movement visible in video footage or photos. Jitter is caused by rotor imbalance, wind, or gimbal issues. Proper maintenance and gimbal calibration reduce jitter significantly.
Kinematics
The study of motion and how drones move through three-dimensional space. Understanding kinematics helps pilots predict drone behavior and plan complex maneuvers. Flight controllers use kinematic calculations to maintain stability.
Latency
The delay between pilot input and drone response. Lower latency provides better control and responsiveness. Network-based drones experience higher latency than direct radio-controlled models.
Lidar
Light Detection and Ranging technology that uses laser pulses to create 3D maps. Lidar provides precise distance measurements and works in low-light conditions. Lidar is essential for advanced surveying, mapping, and autonomous navigation.
Magnetic Declination
The difference between magnetic north and true north at a specific location. Drones must account for magnetic declination during compass calibration. Ignoring declination can cause navigation errors over long distances.
Nose
The front of the drone where the camera and forward sensors are located. The nose direction determines the drone's heading and forward movement. Pilots must maintain visual orientation of the nose for safe manual flight.
Obstacle Avoidance
Sensor systems that detect and help the drone avoid collisions with objects. Obstacle avoidance uses cameras, lidar, or radar to sense the environment. Advanced systems can automatically reroute around detected obstacles.
Payload
Any equipment or cargo carried by the drone beyond its basic structure. Payloads include cameras, sensors, lidar, or delivery packages. Payload weight affects flight time, stability, and maximum altitude.
Quadcopter
A drone with four rotors arranged in a square or X pattern. Quadcopters are the most common drone design for consumer and professional use. The four-rotor design provides excellent stability and maneuverability.
Return to Home
An automatic function that sends the drone back to its takeoff location. Return to home activates when the pilot loses signal, battery runs low, or on command. GPS coordinates are recorded at takeoff to ensure accurate return.
Roller
The side-to-side tilting motion of a drone. Rollers are controlled by the pilot to move the drone left or right. Excessive rolling can cause loss of altitude or stability.
Stabilization

Throttle

Velocity

Xenophobic Airspace

Yaw
